Digestive Health

The digestive system is a super highway through the centre of your body. Its essentially a tube with some organs connected to it, such as the gall bladder and pancreas, and stretched out it is as long as a telegraph pole. 70-80% of the immune system is located around the gut, in fact as soon as you eat you’re having a conversation with the immune system via lymphatic tissue in the mouth. The gut has its own nervous system containing around 500 million neurons, and there is constant communication between the gut and the brain. Important neurotransmitters are produced in the intestines - 50% of dopamine and 95% of serotonin. Our understanding of the gut microbiome is continually expanding but we do know that it is a complex ecosystem with around 2-3kg of microbes (in comparison the brain weighs 1-2kg).

A healthy gut environment is robust and you shouldn’t be aware of it as it performs all its complex functions. When it is unhappy, it can dominate how you feel.

Case Study

Ben* had long term digestive issues after being treated with multiple antibiotics and steroids for severe childhood asthma. As an adult he had been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome. He came to see me as a last resort when his abdominal symptoms became unbearable. I recommended a comprehensive stool test which picked up multiple issues including very high levels of calprotectin. Calprotectin is a medically approved marker which can help to differentiate between irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. I recommended that he be referred for a colonoscopy, which found that he had ulcerative colitis. So he actually had an inflammatory bowel disease and not irritable bowel syndrome. With the use of diet and supplements he has regained control over his health.
